Zambia Summer Program
The Global Health Program offers an eight-week summer program in Lusaka, Zambia. Students will have the opportunity to work with the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (SAIPAR), to complete a research project on various topics related to Zambia. At the end of their eight-week program, students will write a research paper and present their findings to SAIPAR, partner organizations, and relevant stakeholders during a final presentation. Through our collaboration with SAIPAR, students will be equipped with the resources to meaningfully confront both the good and bad that accompany development. Lusaka challenges the stereotypical Western understanding of poor, rural, underdeveloped Africa and students will have the opportunity to enhance their understanding of global health through this lens. Past students have completed research on epilepsy and stigma in Zambia, as well as on Zambia's recent constitutional reform process.
In addition to their work with SAIPAR, students may choose to gain clinical experience at the University Teaching Hospital, or participate in service projects with local non-governmental organizations in Lusaka.
Students looking to gain clinical experience will be shadowing healthcare professionals at University of Zambia's School of Medicine. In the past, students have enjoyed working with physicians, medical technicians, and nurses in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery, Microbiology, Maternity, and Paediatrics. During their time at the
University Teaching Hospital, students will also participate in various service projects such as media room reagent audits, media prep, compilation of survey data, and more.
During the 8-week program, students will also live in pairs with a local homestay family. Students will share living quarters with one other student, share meals with their homestay family, and learn about Zambian culture and life in Lusaka.
