Study at the Umbra Institute

PerugiaOften called “the big university town in a small Italian city,” Perugia is the home of the Umbra Institute, which offers distinctive fall, spring, and summer programs. Students can choose from a variety of courses. Academic field trips to famous Italian cities and sites, community engagement opportunities, and extracurricular activities take you out of the classroom and into the real Italy.

Perugia’s hilltop location serves as the ideal backdrop for your study abroad in Italy. Rich in art, architecture, and historical significance, it is internationally recognized as a city of learning. The ancient city is surrounded by the rolling hills of Umbria and Tuscany. While lying off the beaten path, travel from Perugia is easy as Rome, Florence, Siena, Assisi, and Cortona lie only a short distance away.

  • With four semester-long and summer program options, the Umbra Institute is certain to meet your academic needs and personal interests.
  • Learn Italian while pursuing courses in a variety of disciplines taught in English with Umbra Institute's General Studies Program, which includes an Honors Program or Independent Research for qualified students.
  • Study food with Umbra’s Food Studies Program.
  • Immerse yourself fully in Italian language and culture through the Direct Enrollment Program studying at the local university.
  • Get involved! Community engagement opportunities at the Umbra Institute abound, from academic internships to service learning projects, volunteering, and more.

Arcadia Advantage
Upon arrival in Perugia, you will meet the Arcadia and Umbra Institute staff; participate in a comprehensive orientation; and move into your housing. You'll be placed in an Italian language course based on your existing proficiency in Italian, so whether you have never taken a course, or speak at an advanced level, your time at the Umbra Institute will be an important opportunity to improve your language skills. All students enrolling in the Arcadia program in Perugia will be expected to attend orientation. At this time, academic contracts are signed, expectations are established, basic cultural differences are explained, and practical matters such as internet access, cell phone service, banking, health and safety, rules of conduct, housing issues and emergency contact information are discussed.
